2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic launches today at $34,005

If you liked that Dodge Challenger R/T Classic package we profiled earlier this week from the Detroit Auto Show, you can now go place an order for one of your very own. In addition to the model-specific wheels and spiffy retro badging and stripes, Challengers with the R/T Classic package also feature functional hood scoops to help out with engine cooling. We recommend opting for the 6-speed manual, which also nets you the Track Pack, a few extra horses, and a 3.92 rear.

Only three Six colors are available, including HEMI Orange, TorRed, and the killer-looking B5 Blue (which, until now, had only been offered on that special Richard Petty auction car). Get that and you have yourself one extremely bitchin' muscle cruiser. Don't believe us? Look here. Oh, when you go to the dealer, prepare to part with something in the neighborhood of $34,005 before options.

We'd hoped to add some sweet new PR shots of the R/T Classic to our existing gallery, but Chrysler simply faked it this time, shooting the orange car on the floor of the Detroit show and then adding a pair of Photoshopped backgrounds. Photo shoots are expensive, you know.

As we move forward, there little doubt that the internal combustion engine -- in its current form -- will eventually be phased out in favor of... something. It's already begun to take place in the millions of hybrids that are currently on the market and many believe that these vehicles are just a stepping stone towards the ultimate goal of a fully electrified machine. We're not quite ready to proclaim the ICE dead, but it's firm grasp on nearly 100% of the market seems likely to wane, and Larry Burns of General Motors knows it. GM is working feverishly on the Chevy Volt and the newly-christened Voltec powertrain that powers it and the Cadillac Converj concept, but there's no guaranteeing its success in the marketplace.

Burns has posted a plea to the American people to put their power behind American companies and their stake in the new-wave automobile, calling for "a partnership between the U.S. government, auto manufacturers and suppliers, the energy and infrastructure industries, and other key stakeholders focused on transforming the automobile." Before any real drastic change can take place, the U.S. government would need to sign off on specific technologies, an EV infrastructure would need to replace our current gasoline-fed economy and American citizens would need to buy the newfangled cars and trucks. So, American people, what say you?

Automotive journalism legend David E. Davis, Jr., may find himself heading a new magazine if an independent effort to spiff up Detroit's image can find a footing. New York's Kelmenson, Davis (yes, that Davis) & Associates is trying to turn up $50 million to create a non-profit entity to spread the word about the great strides domestic automakers have made lately. The concept, which would be outwardly similar to the "Got Milk" campaign, was developed by Tony Kuhn, an executive partner at KDA.

The $50 million would fund a marketing effort aimed at convincing Americans to take another look at General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler. The advertising would be augmented by a cable TV documentary and a Davis-helmed "American Drive" magazine. Former Chrysler chairman Lee Iacocca thinks it's a dandy idea, and has even lobbied on Kelmenson's behalf to auto executives. While they're flattered by the attention and support the idea, honchos at General Motors, Chrysler, and Ford have passed on bankrolling it. While we're not able to throw any money at it, either, Detroit's perception versus reality gap is a palpable problem, and it would be nice to see some of the buying public receive a more up-to-date education.

Israeli-based electric car dealmakers Better Place can now tick Canada off their list of places to set up shop. The company announced a new deal in Ontario yesterday. Meanwhile, over in Singapore, we learned how $1.3 million isn't really $1.3 million, courtesy of AMPLE Motion. What we haven't learned quite yet is whether or not the Baracktank is emissions legal.
