Fair Dinkum: Aussie gov't once considered trading beef for Alfas

Fair Dinkum: Aussie gov't once considered trading beef for Alfas

Studying history can be a tiresome pursuit, but once in a while something comes completely out of left field to make you sit up and pay attention. This is one of those moments. The Australian national archives have released government documents which reveal that, in 1978, the Australian government was prepared to endorse a deal that would have... wait for it... traded beef for cars. Alfa Romeos, to be precise.

To be fair, the deal wasn't to trade sides of beef for actual cars. No, that would come too close to actually, you know... making sense. This deal would have traded 7,000 metric tons of beef and offal (entrails, hooves and whatnot) in exchange for quotas, as in the right to import Alfas into Australia. In the late 70's, apparently, Australia had very tight regulations on the number of cars which could be imported from any particular country, while the European Economic Community had similar quotas on the importation of foreign meat. The deal would have allowed both parties - even though they were the governments themselves (Alfa was state-owned at the time) - to circumvent the trade regulations. Of course the deal didn't go through, which is just as well because the whole ideal was utterly ridiculous.

Super Snake for Sale: ASC-McLaren Dodge Viper NAIAS showcar

Click above for a gallery of the ASC Diamondback Viper Concept

A McLaren-tuned Dodge Viper? That's some synergy, and it's also what everyone was asking when American Specialty Cars (ASC) unveiled their reworked asp at the Detroit Auto Show back in 2006. But there was a logic to it all: At the time, Chrysler was still in bed with Daimler, which owns Mercedes-Benz, which was tied in with McLaren and produced the SLR supercar. The Diamondback Viper Concept boasted a McLaren-tuned V10, but while the F1 team was running Mercedes mils around the grand prix circuit, this super-snake was created by an entirely different McLaren.

The Diamondback concept featured a host of carbon fiber body panels and an "OmniCarbon" hood to show off the car's 615-horsepower V10 tuned by McLaren Performance Technologies. The American outfit based near Indianapolis was started by the same Bruce McLaren behind the F1 team, but with a focus on preparing his Can-Am racers for competition in North America. Whatever the association with the legendary Kiwi, the Diamondback was a real show-stopper. Unfortunately, only the one example was made, but that show car is now available for a lucky buyer to take home. It cost ASC about $750,000 to build the Viper back in 2006, but only 55 miles later, it's up for grabs for $295k. Follow the link for more details, and be sure to check out the images in the gallery below.

Ex-Cowboys' 1991 BMW 850Ci one-off for sale in Texas

Click above the view a gallery of this custom convertible BMW 850i

Long before the retro-licious Z8 and the modern 6 Series, BMW's range-topping sport coupe was the 8-Series. Characterized by its distinctive shark nose and available with a choice of eight- or 12-cylinder engines, the 8-Series was sadly never offered as a convertible. But it would have made a smart-looking roadster, as one customer was evidently determined to discover.

Commissioned by Erik Williams, offensive tackle for the Dallas Cowboys back in their glory days, this one-of-a-kind 1991 BMW 850i convertible is now up for sale by a dealer in New Braunfels, Texas. Craftsmanship of the folding soft-top, as you can see from the images in the gallery below, may not be up to world-class standards, but for a unique V12-powered German cabrio, the $25,900 asking price is at least accessible.

Report: BYD plans two more electric cars in 2009

Report: BYD plans two more electric cars in 2009

BYD, which stands for Build Your Dreams, is a Chinese company with huge ambition to become the world's largest automaker. If there's any chance of making that monumental task a reality, the company will need some amazing products, a stage to present them to the world and a little luck. At least one of those requirements has been met, as BYD is set to capitalize on Nissan's absence at the Detroit Auto Show in January by placing its products right on the main floor with all the rest of the major automakers. BYD's working on the product problem too, having just released its first plug-in hybrid, called the F3DM, in its home market ealier this month. If that weren't enough, the automaker reportedly plans to release two more all-electric models in 2009, with the goal of bring its products to the crucial American and European markets in 2011.

All of these impressive developments have been made possible with the help of a $230 million investment from Warren Buffet. Much like the upcoming Chevy Volt, the BYD F3DM and F6DM sedans and the E6 van rely on an electric motor and an on-board battery pack to provide motive force for the first 60 miles, after which a normal gasoline-powered engine kicks in to keep the party going. Needless to say, we'll keep an eye out for the budding Chinese automaker next month in Detroit.

Cheap Gas = Trucks to outsell cars again this month

Cheap Gas = Trucks to outsell cars again this month

It's the same old story, people say one thing, yet do another. The price of fuel has fallen to the point that it's no longer financially ruinous to fill the tank on a full-size pickup, so looks like truck sales will eclipse cars in December. Despite the public's rhetoric about smaller and more fuel efficient vehicles, the populous has seemingly gone back for another feed at the truck trough. Winter tends to remind people of the things that SUVs and trucks are good for, like plowing and effortless going in inclement conditions while also carrying a passel of rugrats and their associated detritus. Not only are truck sales expected to be up, Hybrids will be the flip side of the trend, underperforming compared to what everyone might have thought a mere four months ago. It might end well for the automakers, with higher profit trucks bouncing back, though the investment in green and hybrid technology will go wasted if the marketplace ignores it, a real danger with fuel prices easing... for the time being. Toyota will debut Tundra Work Truck Package in San Diego

Click above for high-res image gallery of the Toyota Tundra Work Truck Package

One glaring omission in the range of Tundra trim levels is a stripper model suitable for duty as a basic work truck. Toyota will change all that at this year's San Diego Auto Show (Dec. 31, 2008 to Jan. 4, 2009) when the 2010 Toyota Tundra Work Truck Package debuts. Like any good work truck, a Tundra with the Work Truck Package is decontented enough to guarantee that your employees don't enjoy the drive too much. All the chrome on the Tundra's exterior has been replaced with black plastic, including the front and rear bumpers and grille, the latter of which has been slightly revised with a two-bar design. The side view mirrors are only manually adjustable, the bench seat is upholstered in washable vinyl, the floor is rubber and the dash is all black plastic. Cruise control and remote keyless entry are also gone as standard features. Available on Regular and Access Cab models in standard and long bed configurations with your choice of a V6 or V8 engine, the Work Truck Package will lower the price of your Tundra by as little as $550 and as much as $665. While not exactly the most exhilarating debut this auto show season, Toyota no doubt sees the benefit of broadening the Tundra's appeal to businesses that get their hands dirty.

Lexus hints at HS 250h dedicated hybrid for Detroit show

Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe informed us at least year's Detroit Auto Show that his company would be bringing two new hybrids to this year's show in D-town. The first is the much anticipated next-gen Prius and the second is the first dedicated hybrid model for Lexus. This week the Japanese luxury automaker made it official with a page on its consumer website heralding the debut of the Lexus HS 250h on January 11, smack dab in the middle of press days for the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

Not much else is known about the vehicle, other than that it will be available to buy in the Fall of 2009. We suspect the HS 250h will be a Lexus-badged version of the Prius in much the same way that the ES350 is a version of the Toyota Camry. Thus, the HS 250h will also use the same next-gen Hybrid Synergy drivetrain that will debut in the new Prius, both sporting nickel-metal hydride battery packs for the time being until development work on advanced lithium-ion packs is completed. Stay tuned for more info on these two hybrid models from Toyota and Lexus as the 2009 Detroit Auto Show draws ever closer. Thanks for the tip, DJ Pearce!

Click above for high-res image gallery of the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid

Sure, the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid may have a base price that's more expensive than a Toyota Camry Hybrid ($27,270 vs. $26,150), but you get oh so much more. Aside from more interesting styling and a trick LCD display called SmartGauge, Ford Fusion Hybrid owners will be able to travel 41 miles in the city for every gallon of gas they use. So says the Environmental Protection Agency, which has finally released official fuel economy numbers for Ford's most miserly vehicle. The 2010 Fusion Hybrid's official rating of 41 mpg city and 36 mpg highway bests the Toyota Camry Hybrid by 8 mpg and 2 mpg, respectively. Ford points out that it even beats the smaller Honda Civic Hybrid by 1 mpg in the city. Credit goes to Ford and its engineers who developed the Fusion Hybrid's new hybrid drivetrain, which is based on the same one used in the Ford Escape Hybrid but features many advances like smaller and lighter nickel-metal hydride batteries and the ability to run up to 47 mph on electric power alone. That last ability alone raises the bar substantially for hybrids and puts the Fusion Hybrid in a class of its own... for now. The next-generation Toyota Prius will debut in January at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, and we expect the Toyota Camry Hybrid to benefit greatly from adopting its new Synergy Drive hybrid drivetrain. In the meantime, check out our First Drive of the 2010 Ford Fusion by clicking here.

Honda might be killing off the NSX and pulling its factory support out of various two- and four-wheeled racing events along with its long-running Honda Hoot gathering, but the automaker has managed to find the resources to invest in a five-story top hat-wearing Asimo float to lead the Rose Parade on January 1. In addition to the towering presence of Asimo, a hydrogen-powered FCX Clarity will pace the event, which moves pretty slow and therefore probably doesn't really need a pace car at all. No matter, this spectacle will be witnessed by millions of people tuning in to watch the 120th Tournament of Roses and the event will celebrate Honda's 50th year in the United States.

In addition to the giant Asimo robot and FCX Clarity, which will be accompanied by a Super Cub motorcycle, Honda will be providing 166 Metropolitan scooters and 12 generators to power the event. As you may have guessed, Honda is a major sponsor to the Tournament of Roses and is hoping to win another major award, as it's done in 13 of the last 14 years.

Toyota cuts profit forecast again, declines to discuss next year's outlook

Toyota cuts profit forecast again, declines to discuss next year's outlook

Proclaiming that the global economic crisis is "... of a critical scale that comes along once in a hundred years," Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe cut his company's forecasts to just 50 billion yen ($555M USD). That modest profit (something of a rounding error versus last fiscal year's 1.7 trillion yen) comes at a time when worldwide sales are flagging and the yen is rising.

That 50 billion yen is a long way from Toyota's first initial projection for this fiscal year (1.25 trillion yen, or $13.9B USD), illustrating just how ugly it is out there for every automaker worldwide, and even a far cry from their amended projections from just last month (550 billion yen, or $6.1B USD). Further, Toyota isn't ruling out further profit cuts before the fiscal year is over.

In perhaps its most telling move, Toyota declined to give any guidance for fiscal 2009 or 2010, a move that breaks with company tradition. Click on the link below for more blow-by-gory-blow details of Toyota's fortunes.

Remember the CalCars idea to prepay auto companies for a plug in hybrid? It's back and the price for entry has dropped from from $10,000 to $1,000. Speaking of back, the opening of the plant that was supposed to build the engines for the Chevy Volt and the Cruze has been pushed back. GM says no delay in the Volt program, though. Oh, and and this is how Chrysler thinks it will beat the Volt.

Audi A1 Sportback Concept Unveiled at 2008 Paris Motor Show

Audi A1 Sportback Concept Unveiled at 2008 Paris Motor ShowAudi's getting serious about this premium-subcompact category.  After teasing us with the delightful A1 Metroproject Quattro concept at last year's Tokyo show, the firm evolved the design into this four-door hatchback - the A1 Sportback Concept - for the 2008 Paris motor show.Designers kept much of the styling of the A1 Metroproject Quattro - notably the large grille, aggressive fascia, and rounded hood - but re-worked a good majority of the car.  We'd argue that everything aft of the A-pillars is very reminiscent of the A3.  Perhaps that's not surprising, as it too is deemed to be a 'Sportback.' Stylists also aimed to give the car a technical look.  Certainly, the dark metallic silver color helps that cause, but many details, including the finely-spaced grille insert and the layered-wave projectors in both head- and tail lamps, add to the high-tech feel. Perhaps that's fitting, as the driveline is just as technically advanced.  The A1 Sportback's main source of power is a 150-hp, 1.4-liter turbocharged direct-injection I-4, coupled through Audi's new seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission.  One more thing - the concept is also a plug-in hybrid, as it's fitted with a 20-kW electric motor that's integrated into the transmission. Though the motor can add an additional 110 lb-ft of torque under hard acceleration, it's also capable of powering the car on its own.  A lithium-ion battery pack reportedly allows for the A1 to travel up to 62 miles in pure-EV mode.   The result?  The A1 is a decidedly sporty (0-62 mph in 7.9 seconds and a top-end of 125 mph) yet efficient (60.31 mpg on a European combined test cycle) compact hatchback. Audi may not have been successful with subcompacts in the past (need we remind you of the A2?), but if this combination of fun and frugality carry through to the production car (due in 2009), we think the Germans will have a serious Mini Cooper-killer on their hands.Read More | Digg It | Add to del.icio.us

Sympathy for The Union

Sympathy for The UnionSomewhere in heaven, Kurt Vonnegut is smoking a Pall Mall and chuckling sadly to himself. The famous American author (and onetime Saab salesman) often scathingly attacked our nation’s political elite for its utter opposition to the rights of the workingman. But perhaps even he could not have imagined a situation as absurdly pathetic as that which unfolded in the U.S. Senate last night. With our economy already in tatters, and 3 million more jobs on the brink of extinction, the Senate declined to pass $14 billion in loans to the nation’s automakers. The ultimate hold up was neither the Detroit Three’s turnaround plans nor even their history of opposing environmental reform. Rather, GOP Senators just couldn’t swallow the idea of giving the automakers any money while their employees make more than those who work for foreign automakers. The UAW wanted to forestall these concessions until 2011. The Senators wanted them right now. Apparently, a government that just threw $1.5 trillion at banks can’t spare a nickel to allow regular people the time to adjust to making less money. Now, it’s perfectly clear to anyone who follows the auto industry that the Detroit automakers simply cannot survive while saddled with antiquated contracts. It’s also true that the Union has at times shortsightedly dragged its feet on the reforms needed to save its employers. Indeed, Union negotiators were once more trying to delay the inevitable last night, refusing to bend the last bit to make a deal.Nevertheless, it’s maddening, almost nauseating, to see officials we elect to government so publicly and vehemently trying to cut the pay of hundreds of thousands of middle class workers. The mostly southern, mostly Republican opponents to the deal insist their motives are not political, that they’re not merely trying to further the interests of their region’s fledgling auto factories at the expense of dozens in Michigan, Ohio, and elsewhere. This begs the question of what, precisely, so bothers them about the union workers. Is it the fact that they enjoy cheap health insurance and reliable pensions, like Senators do? Is it that they insist on being part of the middle class without paying for an increasingly unaffordable college education? Let’s hope, for Senators' sake, that they are merely lying when they say it’s not about politics. Few options remain for the automakers and their workers. The union could give in to Republican demands, and accept lower benefits; however, its constituency might not accept such concessions. After all, GM, Ford, and Chrysler workers have been paying dues for decades on the very premise of earning more money than their nonunion counterparts - that’s why people join unions. The Bush administration could still cut a piece of its initial $700 billion offering to banks. But President Bush has repeatedly made clear he will do no such thing, and in eight years, he’s gained something of a reputation for seldom changing his mind. It seems then the Senators opposed to the bailout might get their wish â€" bankruptcy. Of course, most analysts say a bankruptcy would be disastrous, and ultimately, very costly for the government. Perhaps at that point the Senators will realize the fate of the country lies not with their unyielding principles but rather, in the well-being of the average Americans they were supposed to serve.Read More | Digg It | Add to del.icio.us

Given the chance to take the KTM X-Bow into any environment, a wintery wonderland wouldn't be one of them. But KTM wants to allow its mid-engine track tool to weather all the seasons - and peddle a few more of its PowerParts and PowerWear accessories to its drivers. X-Bow owners can choose from either central-locking or five-bolt wheels wrapped in Pirelli Sottozero snow tires, along with an optional set of chains. And even though a fixed roof is planned for future models, the current generation X-Bow's occupants will have to deal with the climes clothed in Schffel jacket and pants, and matching Schuberth helmet. The full line of winter wear will set you back 950 euros, and when you arrive at your chilly destination, you can wrap the X-Bow in either an indoor cover (380 euro) or an outdoor cloak for 325 euro. We think we'll pass and wait for spring.

Click above for gallery of the GYM Concept Car by Da Feng

What you're looking at above is the GYM Car concept designed by Coventry University design student Da Feng. As you might guess, its design incorporates exercise equipment that allows the driver to take his or her workout on the road. The GYM Car itself is a single-seater with a lightweight, injection-molded, magnesium alloy chassis and carbon fiber bodywork.

The GYM is powered by an electric motor with batteries that can be recharged by plugging it in or, and here's the interesting part, through the use of the onboard workout machinery. When the vehicle is parked, the driver can use any or all of the built-in equipment to generate electricity for the charge. There's a stepping machine and rowing machine available using the sliding seat, pedals and steering wheel. There's also a bench press or pull up simulator that uses the seat and an overhead handle. The arm rests can even be used for curls thanks to their tensioned resistance. Pretty much any move you make inside the GYM Car will burn calories and generate electrons at the same time. Check out more renderings in the gallery below.

Henrik Fisker has a dream, and an honorable one at that. "We see no reason style and performance need to be sacrificed to attain fuel efficiency and environmental responsibility," says Fisker, designer of the Aston Martin DB9, V8 Vantage, BMW Z8 and the upcoming plug-in hybrid Karma sedan. That's a tough message to get out there, though, since many people can't seem to reconcile the thought of driving excitement with environmentally friendly design. To help break down those obvious barriers, Fisker Automotive has brought aboard Russell Datz, a man who has previously worked with Lotus for the U.S. launch of the Elise and Panoz, makers of Ford-powered boutique sportscars. Datz is also familiar with going as fast as possible, having owned an Audi 5000 Turbo Quattro and autocrossed a Honda CRX. Welcome aboard, Russell! We're happy to see a longtime gearhead filling another desk at Fisker Automotive and wish you the best of luck in your new position.
